I am a freelance journalist specialising in medicine and health with the odd bit of biosciences thrown in. After a BSc in biomedical science, I realised I wanted to write about but not ‘do’ medical research so I did a MA in journalism and well and truly caught the reporting bug. A few staff positions in London followed, including a stint at the Lancet Oncology where I learnt to edit scientific papers and do some commissioning. From there I went to work as a clinical reporter at Pulse, where I won several awards before moving to BBC News online where I worked as a health reporter for four years.

Life outside London and the freelance life was far too tempting. I moved back to Sheffield and while continuing to freelance I quickly began teaching at The University of Sheffield before moving to Sheffield Hallam University as an associate lecturer.

More recently I have teamed up with my friend and colleague Lily Canter to develop the Freelancing for Journalists book, podcast and community.
